On February 16, the Ministry of Earth Sciences released new guidelines for the geospatial sector in India, which deregulates existing protocol and liberalises the sector for a more competitive field. The guidelines, drafted by the Department of Science and Technology, bring sweeping changes to Indias mapping policy, specifically for Indian companies.

“We recently liberalised geospatial data. If we could have done this 10 years back, it is likely that Google would have been made in India, not outside. The talent is Indian but the product is not,” he said at the sixth meeting of the Governing Council of NITI Aayog. A Bench headed by the environment watchdog’s Chairperson, Justice A.K. Goel, said it prima facie agreed that OIL failed to take safety precautions and there was need for ensuring such incidents do not recur.
