Operation Stösser was launched during Germany’s last gamble:  Wacht am Rhein (Operation Watch on the Rhine), Hitler’s offensive in the West which Americans know as the Battle of the Bulge, had as its ultimate objective the Belgian port of Antwerp. Recently captured, it was under repair to be reopened as a deep-water port. When Antwerp was serviceable, the Allies would be able to bring supplies and reinforcements quickly to the front lines instead of transporting them across France from t...

"Battalion of Death": Russias Controversial Womens Battalion in World War I The roles of women in World War I took an interesting turn in 1917, when Russia looked to her brave female soldiers to boost morale. Heres What You Need to Know: Among the so-called Amazons crossing the gender line was Maria “Yasha” Botchkareva. By spring 1917, Russia had borne the heaviest burden of World War I. Russian reports counted more than six million men killed, wounded, or interned as prisoners of war. Th...

For Here Be Barbarians Her collapsing body was now that of a marionette deprived of her nimble puppeteer. A young life ending, bloodily, in front of me and the surging throng. Taken by the stabbing tip of an umbrella, on a subway platform, on a dry Italian day. On her face no indication of that irony. Only…what? Resignation? Acceptance? For this was Rome and here be barbarians. In Via Rasella, near the Trevi Fountain, I counted, as the rain fell, the bullet and bomb scars that recall the 23rd...

No amount of high-tech special systems could save Berlin from a two-front war. Key point: The Allies simply outproduced Germany and had more resources to use to win. In fact, some of Hitlers vanity wonder projects may have come at the cost of trying to win or come to a truce. During Germany’s early string of victories between 1939 and 1941, Hitler informed the members of the nation’s aerospace industry that he had decided to impose new restrictions on aircraft research and development. How...

I am senior correspondent at The American Conservative, a magazine founded in Washington, D.C. in 2002, in opposition to the war in Iraq. What inspired you to choose this career path? I feared I couldn’t do anything else. Everything else seemed slow, and I was a bonafide news junkie. Like any addict, what of course was required was escalation. In my mid-twenties, at least, I think I would have floundered just reading the net all day at some law office. I also made a contrarian bet that media...

Catrine Clay has chronicled the range of brave domestic opposition to the Nazi regime, says Nicholas Jacobs Von Schulenburg in the People’s Court on his day of execution in 1944 THE great historian of German Resistance, the Canadian-German Peter Hoffmann, calculated that 77,000 Germans lost their lives resisting Hitler. It is therefore surprising that it has taken nearly 80 years for the first book to appear in the English language written for the man and woman in the street on this important...

Joe Biden is NOT My President This morning I opened my AOL account and immediately a story from  The Huffington Post caught my eye. It seems that a New Jersey congressman,  Bill Pascrell, a Democrat,  “has called on House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) to bar 126 GOP representatives from the House, arguing that their support for the failed, baseless Texas lawsuit seeking to hijack the presidential election violated the Constitution.” Pascrell “accused the Republican congressmen...
