day one, january 2009, was to close the facility. now they have closed the facility that was to close gitmo instead. the president wants to do this. he believes it can be done. now in gitmo they have done quite successfully. there are number of military trial and convictions. they sent others home. no reason to go down there but idealogical opposition to keeping gitmo open rather than come here. in a youtube video never really seen can set off riots in egypt and libya imagine trying usama bin laden s son-in-law in new york. bill: this is federal court. lower manhattan. the amount of access we may get may or may not happen. seven have been convicted by military tribunals so far at gitmo. you remember khalid sheikh mohammed. remember the outcry? people were coming out of the woodwork to say this should not happen. eventually the administration reversed course. wasn t only bipartisan. democrats in the senate including dick durbin from illinois when a plan was released to send gitmo
world. and the things that obama has done that have alienated the world are the things that bush did in the war on terror. these are things like the drone strikes and, of course, keeping gitmo open after he refused to listen to barak obama refused to listen to eric holder. i think it teaches you a lesson that defending america does not win popularity contests. brian: and never will. let s talk about this, any day now we could be finding out we know sometime in june the supreme court will rule whether obamacare s mandate is constitutional or not. you believe republicans, some of them are pushing for obamacare to stay put. unfortunately, it s not just a belief. it is the reality. you have republican senators like roy blunt who have come out foursquare in favor of preserving what he believes to be the most quote, unquote, popular provisions of the obamacare mandate. i m talking about things like the slacker mandate that forces
including americans who may be involved in terrorist activities abroad. i think they have kept gitmo open, they have taken a pretty, pretty strong position, they ve had a lot of criticism on the left about it. well, i made the statement yeah? go ahead, jason. i would just say that, again, you know, republicans overwhelmingly in the senate and former bush administration officials had the support of megyn: let him respond. go ahead. you made this statement about gitmo. that s interesting. the president ran on that he was going to close gitmo, but then he started getting the 7:00 in the morning briefings that presidents get when you re in the war on terror, we are still engaged in and all of the sudden gitmo is not closing and we re paying $750,000 for a soccer field when we can t balance our own budget and the guy that s going to head up review and set policy is the lawyer who represented john walker lindt. to me it doesn t make political sense. forgetting the legal issues
