Study finds eliminating race-based metrics improves prediction for COPD outcomes

A new study from researchers at Brigham and Women s Hospital has found that using race-neutral metrics to interpret the results of lung function tests more accurately predicted the risk of death and disease flare-ups in patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), compared to commonly used race-specific ranges. Results are published in the American Journal of Respiratory and Critical Care Medicine.

Spirometry clinical trial eligibility may differ with race-neutral equations

Equations that don t use racially and ethnically adjusted spirometry results to help determine eligibility for chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) clinical trials may lead to higher percentages of Black patients enrolled, according to research published at the ATS 2024 International Conference.
