Bilateral cooperation between Canada and South Africa is coordinated within the framework of a Declaration of Intent on Strengthened Cooperation, which was signed in 2003 and laid the foundation for the Annual Consultations (AC). The AC is co-chaired by the Director-General of International Relations and Cooperation and the Deputy Minister of Global Affairs respectively.

As African leaders converge in Beijing with other world leaders for the 3rd BRI forum, it should look beyond the glamour of summitries, digest and dissect the intricate layers of BRI, contribute to enriching the mechanism and engage in policy coordination and alignment that delivers value to Africa’s existential requirement of economic recovery and growth.

The choice Malaysia makes will not only determine its place in the global community but also set a precedent for other Muslim-majority nations grappling with similar challenges. For the sake of its future and its cherished multicultural identity, one can only hope that Malaysia chooses wisely.

A lasting solution most be found. Two cannot walk together unless they agree. Never has a failure to agree been more ruinous. Never has it been this murderous.
