Gerritsen Beach in southern Brooklyn is home to one of the last remaining volunteer firefighting units in New York but the city hasn’t made it easy on them.
NEW PALTZ, N.Y. â The Village Board has accepted contractors bids totaling $6.64 million for the construction of a 16,000-square-foot fire station at the corner of North Putt Corners Road and Henry W. DuBois Drive.
The bids â which totaled less than the expected $7 million â were approved during a videoconference meeting of the board on Wednesday.

âWe had a very good outcome in terms of a number of bidders for this project,â Mayor Tim Rogers said.
âWe bid out this project over a year ago, and we felt the numbers came in too high,â Rogers said. âWe basically took the design and massaged it. We basically made more of a green building . and I think weâre going to end up saving taxpayers a significant amount of money.â
