Astronomers have taken clearest images yet of "odd radio circles" – mysterious radio waves a million light years across – and they all seem to have central galaxies containing active supermassive black holes

New observations have revealed the peculiar structures within the mysterious Odd Radio Circles

New images show in clearest detail yet the structure of a mysterious explosion in space that's only visible in radio waves.

Astronomers have traced the source of the image to two distant galaxies.

Scanning through data fresh off the telescope, we saw two ghosts dancing deep in the cosmos. We had never seen anything like it before, and we had no idea what they were. Several weeks later, we had figured out we were seeing two radio galaxies, about a billion light years away. In the centre of each one is a supermassive black hole, squirting out jets of electrons that are bent into grotesque shapes by an intergalactic wind. The two galaxies we think are responsible for the stre...

ASKAP A mysterious circle of radio waves has been detected, the fifth odd radio circle (ORC) ever spotted, but its cause is still unclear. It could simply be the side view of a galaxy with an active black hole at its centre, although it might be the result of a supermassive black hole merger. In 2020, Ray Norris at Western Sydney University, Australia, and his colleagues found four strange circles made from radio waves in space. No one had seen such objects before and the team had … C...
