The invisible wind that caresses grass and leaf and hair. For Studio Ghibli films, these moments of ephemera heighten the world around the characters and reflect the complexity of their inner lives. The visuals will never quite match the soaring emotions the characters’ struggles and triumphs evoke, but damned if they don’t come close. After 36 years of animated films, there’s hardly a frame you’d hesitate to blow up and hang on your wall.

Every April, many of us dwell upon a terrible disaster (besides our tax returns): the Great Earthquake and Fire of 1906. The 65-second temblor struck our fair city in the early hours of Wednesday, April 18. The raging fire that followed left four square miles of destruction.
Although my family, in Idaho at the time, had little knowledge of the event, our late friend Phoebe Brown and her family lived through the disaster and dealt with it bravely. The Brown family lived in a lovely, well-appointed home on Van Ness Avenue. After the powerful jolt struck -it was later determined to be 8.0 on the Richter Scale -the Browns house was still standing, but listing to the rear. All its contents the furniture, china, portraits -had been thrown to the floor and shattered. But luckily, none of the family members was harmed.

Kusmita Morang and her husband Bishnu Morang were expecting their first child. The protest site, with makeshift camps in freezing cold, is not an ideal place for a seven-month pregnant woman.
However, when the fight is about their very survival, staying back is not much of an option. Kusmita and her husband joined the other families on December 25, 2020, resisting eviction from Dibru-Saikhowa National Park. The protest had entered its 5th day. By December 29, her health conditions began to decline. Those at the camps advised her to go back home and rest.
