(KAIT) -This month, KAIT and our parent company Gray Television announced an initiative to “Bridge the Great Health Divide.”
There is a severe lack of healthcare access in the Appalachia and Mississippi Delta regions of our nation.
These two areas also have some of the most unhealthy populations. There are a lot of factors why.

KAITâs parent company, Gray Television, was selected by Googleâs GNI Innovation Challenge for $200,000 in funding to support a multi-platform journalism project that focuses on health disparities in the Mississippi Delta region of the country.
Bridging the Great Health Divide will explore why these disparities exist with a focus on long-term and sustainable solutions.
The Mississippi Delta Region fares far worse than the national average in health indicators and outcomes.
Journalists from KAIT, our sister stations in the region, our DC News Bureau, and our National Investigative Unit will contribute to the project.

Nationally, the infant mortality rate is 5.7 percent for every 1,000 live births.
In Caldwell County it’s 7.2 percent and in Burke County it’s 7.6 percent.
State numbers show more than 90 percent of infant deaths can be traced back to perinatal conditions.
