Olean s Ward 4 Will Feature Democratic and GOP Primary Contests

Olean’s only contests in the June 22 primary will be in Ward 4. Ezra L. Johnson and Sonya M. McCall are running for the Democratic nomination; David F. Paone and Linda M. Edstrom are seeking the Republican nomination. The seat has been vacant since February when Ward 4 Alderman Kevin Dougherty resigned. Also in the Greater Olean area, Ryan W. Hatch and Todd J. Shaw are opposing each other in the Republican primary for highway superintendent in Portville. Shaw is the incumbent. Cuomo Calls on Attorney General to Challenge Census Numbers

Cuomo on Tuesday called on New York Attorney General Letitia James to review the state s legal options for a  challenge to a U.S. Census Bureau plan that will result in the loss of one of the state’s congressional district. Census takers in New York faced unprecedented challenges last year in their efforts to get New Yorkers counted,” Cuomo said in a news release. Bona Students Produce Special Report on President s Speech

BONAVENTURE, NY   Students in the university’s Jandoli School of Communication have produced a special report previewing President Joe Biden’s first address to Congress. The program, a collaboration of SBU-TV, the Jandoli Institute and TAPinto Greater Olean, can be viewed on the SBU-TV YouTube page. Jandoli School students Jaren Holmes and Julia Schneider hosted the show. Holmes and Schneider interviewed Mary Rose Kubal, chair of the university’s Political Science Department, and Richard Lee, an associate professor in the Jandoli School and executive director of the Jandoli Institute. Kubal and Lee discussed the topics the president is likely to address, as well as the role of speeches in American democracy.

U S Census Report Shows New York Will Lose Congressional Seat

By RICHARD LEE Credits: U.S. Census Bureau April 26, 2021 at 10:48 PM New York State will lose one of its 27 congressional districts as part of a reapportionment plan released Monday by the U.S. Census Bureau. The number of congressional seats in each state are adjusted every 10 years based on population figures in the census. According to the plan released by the Census Bureau, New York had a population of 20,215,751 in the 2020 census and would have retained all 27 of its congressional seats if the state’s population was just 89 people higher. Wolfinger Family Fund provides $5,500 in grants to family supported area nonprofits

The fund was originally established by area residents Sandy and Connie Wolfinger to support projects and equipment purchases in the Ellicottville, Smethport (PA) and Coudersport (PA) School districts. Those grants from the fund will continue, but this year and the years coming the family decided to also make donor advised grants to nonprofits chosen by the family.
