A police officer in the southern US state of Mississippi has been suspended after shooting an 11-year-old boy while responding to a domestic disturbance.

According to a Washington Post database, 407 people have been shot and killed by police in the United States this year.

Aderrien Murry was shot in the chest early Saturday in Indianola. An attorney for the child's family is calling for the officer to be fired.

Nakala Murry says her son doesn't understand what happened to him. "His words to me were: 'Why did he shoot me? What did I do?' "

The family has demanded the officer identified as George Capers be fired
