Electricity and gas supplier Octopus is to take on 1.4m more household customers after it acquired Shell’s energy business in the UK and Germany.

Octopus Energy has signed a deal with Shell to buy its UK energy arm, meaning it will now power almost one in ten Britons' homes. 

Octopus has today announced it has signed a deal to buy Shell Energy in the UK and Germany, taking on 2million new energy and broadband customers.

The move will take Octopus Energys retail supply arm to 6.5 million customers.

Shell is selling its home energy business, which has two million customers in the UK and Germany, to Octopus Energy.
