Copper: an essential element in the green economy - Article | Resourcing our future

Copper: an essential element in the green economy “Our vehicle is designed like a mobile phone,” says Greg McGarvie, managing director of Australian Clean Energy Electric Vehicle Group (ACE EV Group), which plans to launch its first electric vehicle in October. “Realistically, most people, on average, travel about 38km a day. So if you bring your car home, you can plug it in, like you plug in your mobile phone, and probably by the time you’ve finished dinner it’s fully charged.” Just like a smartphone, ACE EV’s car relies on copper to run its operating system and to fuel it with electrons. Like wind and solar farms, batteries and high-speed trains, electric vehicles depend on copper’s unmatched electrical and thermal conductivity, meaning the auburn element is set to be a cornerstone of the green economy. In fact, due to these demand factors copper use is set to increase by 50% in the next 20 years.
