Im sure senator murkowski will be here shortly. As some people noah 7. 9 magnitude earthquake hit off the coast of alaska with northwest warnings issuesed for activities that were expected the warning for the tsunami waves have been recalled and no doubt im sure the senator is dealing with lots of things related to that. I want to thank our witnesses, chairman mcintyre and mr. Walker for being here and the staff people that are here and blade we are back in operation. So we look forward from hearing all of the witnesses on the subject of the reliability of the grid and its performance. Last year, secretary perry and the staff viewed the liability of the fuel mix and i was relieved when i saw the staff report in august which i thought was balanced. It carefully distinguished between reliability and resilience and introducing Renewable Resources rgs synthetic i inertia and frequency response and resilience metrics needed to be developed. Unfortunately, secretary perifiled the report as a
We will call this hearing to order. Welcome, everyone this hearing is entitled the first power system [inaudible] including the cyclone. I would like to start by calling on the Ranking Member to get her opening statement. Thank you, and good morning to everyone. Im sure senator murkowski will be here shortly. As some people may know, a 7. 2 magnitude earthquake off the coast of alaska impacting kodiak and parts of the Pacific Northwest with tsunami warnings were issued for activities that were expected and those warnings for tsunami waves have been recalled but no doubt, dealing with lots of things this morning related to that and other issues. So i want to thank the witnesses, chairman mcintyre and mr. Walker for being here and many of the staff people that are glad w you are back in operation. We look forward to hearing from all of the witnesses on the subject of the reliability of the grid and its performance. Last year the secretary and staff reviewed the likability in regards of the changing mix and i was relieved when i saw the report in august which i thought was balanced. It distinguished between the reliability and resilience and described the emerging techniques to integrate more Renewable Resources including synthetic and frequency response and also recommended t
Test test test test test captioning performed by vitac not only the operational aspects but what is needed from a market standpoint since they run the markets in respect to footprints as well. What is needed in a market sense to ensure that resources that are indeed contributing resilience benefits to our grid are properly compensated. Following up on that, both for mr. Van wheelie and mr. Ot ter, to weigh in as well. Data shows that new england was heavily reliant on baseload coal and Nuclear Generation during the recent cold snap. The data shows at the peak of the cold snap, coal fire generation accounted for 7 of dispatched capacity despite being 2. 6 of installed capacity in the region. Really called upon to perform. Additionally, Nuclear Generation accounted for 23 of dispatched capacity, despite only being 12 of the installed capacity. So isnt it fair to conclude when your region needed power the most, it was the reliable coal and Nuclear Power plants that were necessary to keep
Here shortly, and obvious knows that 7. 9 magnitude earthquake hit off of the coast of alaska and the Pacific Northwest with tsunami warnings for activities that were expect and warnings for the tsunami waves were recalled but i am sure that the sen or the is dealing with items related to and that other h issues. I want to thank the chairman mr. Mcintyre and mr. Walker for being here, and many of the staffs that are going to be hearing that we are back in operation. So we look forward to hearing about the sun jek the subjec reliability. And last year we looked at the reliability of the electric grid in light of the mixing fuel change. We have carefully distinguished on the issues of new items to have renewable renewals and also frequent response and also to adopt resilient metrics that needed to be developed. Fortunately when the secretary perry filed the report as a proposal to furk, i was more alarmed. It was the conclusion of the departments own staff, and it was a transparent attem
