Arvid Pardo is hardly a household name. Indeed, I had never heard of the Maltese diplomat until I began exploring potential topics for this quarterâs
Natural Resources & Environment and its focus on Marine and Coastal Law.
But when I stumbled across Pardoâs story, it fascinated me. Born in 1914 to a Swedish mother and Maltese father, Pardo lost his parents as a child. A friend of his fatherâsâan Italian diplomatâraised him in Italy. As World War II began, Pardo joined the Italian underground only to be arrested, in 1940, by Mussoliniâs government and sentenced to 18 years in prison.
