The Orion Spacecraft will complete its closest flyby of the Moon on December 5 local time (December 6, AEDT) as it prepares to return to Earth.

NASAs Orion is now on a path back to Earth after performing an engine burn that shot it around the dark side of the moon. This also brought Orion 79 miles within the lunar surface for its closest flyby yet.

NASAs Artemis I mission to deep space and back is nearing its conclusion as the Orion spacecraft sailed past the moon Monday morning.

If all goes well, this could be the last time NASA has to make the final 4-mile trip to the launch pad for Artemis I.

NASA continues to target Tuesday (Sept. 27) for the launch of Artemis 1 from Kennedy Space Center in Florida, even though a big storm could head toward the Space Coast soon.
