Gandhinagar: The Gujarat Legislative Assembly on Thursday passed a bill to amend the Dharma Swatantriya (Freedom of Religion) Act, 2003, on the day of the conclusion of the ongoing budget session aimed at countering religious conversions by force, called ‘Love Jihad’ is referred to as.
However, the opposition Congress questioned its intentions and termed the Bill as a tool to gain political mileage and create religious divisions.
Enabled by the ruling BJP, the amendment seeks to prohibit and punish religious conversion promoting better lifestyle, divine blessings and conversion on the pretext of marriage.
The bill was introduced in the state assembly by legislative affairs minister Pradeep Singh Jadeja.

The Gujarat Legislative Assembly on Thursday passed an amendment bill that provides for a jail term of up to ten years for fraud or forcible conversion.
The bill amended a 2003 law that punished religious conversion through coercion or purchase.
According to the government, the Gujarat Freedom of Religion (Amendment) Bill, 2021 sought to curb “an emerging trend in which women are lured to marriage for the purpose of religious conversion”.
Congress, the main opposition party, voted against the bill.
