Mumbai Police’s Economic Offences Wing (EOW)s closure report comes at a time when leaders in the Opposition combine–INDIA, have renewed their ‘washing machine’ charge at the BJP.

In a reprieve for Sunetra Pawar, wife of Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister Ajit Pawar and NDA candidate for the Baramati Lok Sabha seat, the Mumbai Police has given her a clean chit in an alleged Rs 25,000-crore cooperative bank scam.

The EOW stated in its closure report that it did not see any criminality or wrongdoing in the matter, adding that the bank in question did not suffer any losses in the process of sanctioning loans or selling the Jarandeshwar Sugar Mill.

In the report, the EOW has said that no financial losses were caused to the bank and so far, Rs 1,343.41 crore have been recovered by the bank from the loans given.

Originally a cooperative, the mill was privatised in 2010 — the Central agency is questioning this move, alleging that there were irregularities in the transaction by the new owner, which it says is linked to senior NCP leader Ajit Pawar.

The ED has attached properties including land, building and machinery of Jarandeshwar Cooperative Sugar Mill worth Rs 65 crore in July 2021 in this case. The matter is listed for hearing on April 19.
