Biodiversity Special Seminar: “Realizing the Potential of Nature-based Solutions for Biodiversity and Carbon Conservation” Lian Pin Koh, associate vice president and chief sustainability scientist at National University of Singapore, will present “Realizing the Potential of Nature-based Solutions for Biodiversity and Carbon Conservation” in Guyot Hall, Room 10, and online via Zoom. Lian Pin is the first speaker in the Biodiversity Special Seminar Series. Nature-based solutions have the potential to address climate change and biodiversity challenges. However, successful outcomes may require careful consideration of implementation approaches, stakeholder interests and local contexts. Janet Currie, the Henry Putnam Professor of Economics and Public Affairs, will present “Where there is Fire, there is Smoke: Effects on Air Pollution and Mental Health in Canada” in Guyot Hall, Room 10, and online via Zoom. Currie is the final speaker in the fall 2023 HMEI Faculty Seminar Series. Recent events have highlighted that air pollution from fires can travel great distances. Professor Currie’s work uses variation in local air pollution stemming from distant fires to identify the impacts of air pollution on hospitalizations for mental health in Canada. Her research shows that there are significant effects on hospitalizations for anxiety and substance abuse, adding to a growing body of literature suggesting that air pollution has negative effects on mental health. This seminar is free and open to the public. Lunch will be available in the Guyot Atrium at noon. All attendees can register here in advance to attend this event via Zoom livestream.
