Today, the European Union held a ground-breaking ceremony to launch the Berbera Beach Development, part of the EU funded Urban development project that was launched in 2020. The Beach component will be implemented by the Berbera Municipality and UN-Habitat over the next 7 months.
The Berbera Beach project, which will particularly focus on inclusion and livelihood creation, will have the following areas: a family area, a female-only area where girls and women can enjoy the beach and the sea freely, sports and youth facilities for girls and boys, a market area, a recycling facility and pocket spaces reserved as public areas to rest, play, host street vendors or small cultural activities.
UN-Habitat and SIDA partner in cash transfer initiative to cushion Kismayo residents from the effects of the COVID-19 pandemic

KISMAYO, SOMALIA 13 April 2021 - UN-Habitat has disbursed the first tranche of direct cash transfers of USD 70 each to 250 vulnerable households in Western Kismayo as part of the COVID-19 response within a larger project funded by the Government of Sweden which addresses youth and urban regeneration in Somalia. The same 250 households will each receive a total of USD 210 over a three – month period to support their families in an initiative which will benefit over 2,000 people indirectly.
“The COVID-19 pandemic has interrupted Somalia’s economic recovery and the government shutdowns have impacted the most vulnerable communities including urban communities in one of Somalia’s largest cities, Kismayo whose dwellers are the main targets of this intervention,” said Falastin Omar, Programme Manager, UN-Habitat Somalia Programme.

EU and UN-Habitat join forces to improve the response to COVID and other crises in Mogadishu

MOGADISHU, 3 February 2021- UN-Habitat today launched a COVID-19 response project in Mogadishu funded by the European Union.
The USD 696.4 million (EUR 5.275 million) project will support preparedness, response and mitigation activities to reduce the negative impacts of COVID-19 on health, public hygiene and livelihoods.
The ‘EU response to health and socio-economic impact of COVID-19 in Mogadishu’ will be implemented with the Benadir Regional Administration (BRA)/Mogadishu Municipality, the World Health Organization, the Danish Refugee Council and Save the Children over the next 18 months.
The project will help increase local capacity in crisis response and effective crises management. Several primary public health facilities will be rehabilitated, COVID-19 centres supported and water, sanitation and hygiene facilities in informal settlements improved. Up to 10,000 households
