Ransomware attacks have increased around the world in recent months, targeting large companies and critical organizations such as hospitals. But digital extortion comes in many forms. And a particularly brutal attack is currently taking place in Finland, where a hacker threatens to release therapy notes and other data stolen from one of the country’s largest psychiatric clinics over the past two years.
Healthcare provider Vastaamo said it was investigating a possible infringement for the first time at the end of September, when a hacker contacted three employees of the organization with extortion requests. Since then, Vastaamo has been working with private security company Nixu, the Finnish Central Investigation Service and other national law enforcement agencies to investigate the situation.
