The remarks came from Secretary of the Navy Carlos Del Toro and Chief of Naval Operations Michael Gilday during a Senate Armed Services Committee hearing held last Tuesday as Senator Tim Kaine pressed the two on service member mental health following another high year of sailor suicides, which topped out at 70 across the service. Seven of the sailors who died by suicide in 2022 were assigned to two Hampton Roads-based installations.
