Battle Creek Will Get a Downtown Fresh Food Market-Deli and Co-op
Even though Horrocks is planning a move out of the downtown Battle Creek area, a new source of fresh produce could be moving in soon.
The project is a partnership between Sprout, Battle Creek Unlimited (BCU), and developers Cody and Caitlynn Newman, owners of the Record Box in Battle Creek. The Newman’s company, Restore 269, plan to develop the old Anson Hotel at the corner of West Michigan Avenue and Carlyle Street, right next to the Record Box. The plan is to bring a deli with fresh produce and a co-op market to the ground floor of the old hotel at 119 West Michigan.

Kate Pierson, 72, is a singer and founding member of The B-52s, who found fame in 1978 with the single Rock Lobster. They have sold more than 20 million albums, such as Cosmic Thing (1989), which included the million-selling hit Love Shack. Today she lives in Woodstock, New York, with her wife, Monica Coleman.
How did your childhood influence your attitude to money?
40 years ago, the Stouffer Battle Creek Hotel opened, and was the centerpiece of a spurt of downtown development that hasn’t been seen, until recently. Back then, Bob Miller, Sr., publisher of the Battle Creek Enquirer had just retired and set his sights on working, through the Miller Foundation and the community to update Battle Creek’s downtown. Voters approved a merger of the city and Battle Creek Township, Kellogg built a world headquarters, and soon the W.K. Kellogg Foundation would build a new downtown headquarters. Many old buildings were sacrificed, as the downtown took on a very different look. Since then, there have been a few projects, but momentum toward another makeover has been steadily building. One of the chief players in that effort has been Battle Creek Unlimited. (BCU).
