Messaging here we have a broad outline that we just spoke about of what hes going to talk to, but what im very curious about is, who is he going to bring as his guests, because that tends to be the symbolic thrust of what the mood of the speech is. remember last year it wasnt a state of the union, but it was addressed to congress in february and he brought the three angel parents, those individuals who had loved ones killed by undocumented immigrants, so there he set a tone for a very hardline i...

A lot of people in the presidents base are very mad at this proposal. >> a lot of folks who have prominent platforms, sell a lot of books, go on radio shows. take someone like steve bannon, for instance, who would clash with the president over stuff like this. in the end donald trump wins in those kinds of clashes. trumps base is trumps base. if he comes out and says an immigration deal is good, i like it, its good for america, i think a lot of these pundits on the far right who oppose this deal...

So-called d.r.e.a.m.ers over the course of 10 to 12 years. thats not something weve heard from this president. of course, thats something thats drawn the ire of the more hardline, hawkish people -- republicans on immigration. and so that, of course, has caused some headlines today. but from immigration to robert mueller to even turning to his chief of staff, john kelly, and saying hes a great guy, the president seemed to want to cover it all with the reporters in the room there. brooke? >> was g...

Of policy decision. >> representative jolly, your former republican colleagues in the house are taking a hardline on this, do you think theyre going to see this the same way the president does in. >> no, absolutely not, listen, republicans havent been able to solve immigration reform in 30 years, the irony here is, whatever passes the senate, theres likely no possible way it would pass the house of representatives, what a bipartisan package would look like in the house simply couldnt pass -- in ...

We only need four or five more to call, to e-mail, to write. thats what should be done here. were doing everything we can. i dont mind the protests outside my office. i cut my teeth in the mccarthy campaign where there were protests, but im on the side of the d.r.e.a.m.ers and im doing everything i can. we need more people to join us so we get 60 votes in the senate and now we have a chance to get that. >> at this point in the fight when i look at republicans in the house, i see them just over t...

Where he has the chance to frame and reframe all of this debate, john. >> jeff zeleny at the white house. appreciate that. its an interesting moment. well watch this vote. well tell you the senate vote as soon as they tally the votes in the senate. then they expect to pass the resolution to refund the government, to reopen the government, then it goes to the house of representatives. what will we learn from this, what will they learn from this, more importantly? lets start with the president. th...

>> getting to work. all right. garrett, im going to let you, i dont know, have a red bull, go for a quick walk. you got a lot of work to do today. all right, this morning, the president -- well, the self-proclaimed dealmaker remains largely absent in the effort to end this shutdown. at the same time, my own inside source inside the white house and multiple other reports indicate white house chief of staff john kelly and senior white house aide steven miller, theyre calling the shots this weekend...

Immigration. and he has a deep conviction thats been documented since at least high school in the area of immigration and believes he is supposed to be in the white house to carry that idea out. in part for the people who jumped on the trump train hoping to see a more hardline on immigration. and so i think the president is listening to him because he has the belief that steven miller may know where significant percentages of trumps base lie on this issue. the challenge is most americans even wi...

This week, they are the ones who do the staff work and remind him, well, mr. president, you said you want x and if you make that deal youre not going to get that. they help pull him back to only to where hes naturally comfortable. >> lets talk about this idea where he says he wants it to be a bill of love. we heard him say that sort of thing about a number of things, a health care bill of love. i love and cherish women, all these things hes said. when he says that, is there anything behind those...

Adviser, steven miller, former chief of staff, and senior aide to jeff sessions. someone who has taken a hardline on immigration issues in the past, but some of the republicans are coming to the presidents defense on this issue, including senator tom cotton who actually just told this to reporters in the hallway to imply that some adviser or staffer is somehow pulling the strings to the president to impugn the president. a lot of tension here as we get into day two of the shutdown, and these neg...
