Harley-Davidson plans to sell locally-produced premium bikes in India in partnership with Hero MotoCorp. The move comes as India imposes a 50% customs duty on imported fully built up bikes, hindering sales of Harley-Davidson s imported bikes. Harley-Davidson had announced to discontinue sales and manufacturing operations in India in September 2020.

Harley-Davidson is set to offer locally-produced premium models in India with partner Hero MotoCorp, to overcome the challenge of high customs duty impeding sales of imported big bikes, according to Jochen Zeitz, the company’s CEO. India imposes 50% customs duty on fully assembled imported motorcycles and the partnership allows the Milwaukee-based bike maker to develop competitive products in the Indian market without the hefty import tax.
