Rutgers bullpen falters as Indiana pulls away for series-opening win
Updated May 07, 2021;
Rutgers’ biggest homestand in over a decade is off to a rocky start.
The Scarlet Knights’ bullpen, lights out in recent weeks, imploded in the eighth inning of Friday’s 8-3 loss to Big Ten-leading Indiana at Bainton Field in Piscataway. The 17th-ranked Hoosiers touched up three Rutgers relievers for a six-run frame as they snapped the Scarlet Knights’ five-game winning streak.
Rutgers will play the Hoosiers again Saturday at 11 a.m., followed by games against third-place Nebraska on Sunday and Monday. The Scarlet Knights (17-14) are in contention for their first NCAA regional appearance since 2007 after sweeping the Cornhuskers in Lincoln last weekend and taking two of three games from Michigan – which is tied atop the league with Indiana – the weekend prior. But they will likely need at least a split this weekend to keep pace.
