The telling Hartlepool exchange that reveals why the strategy went wrong, writes ANDREW PIERCE

As a disconsolate Sir Keir Starmer trudged under an overcast sky, his dark overcoat spattered by rain, one of his aides rushed across the street past a boarded-up shop in Hartlepool to talk to two women laden down with shopping. ‘Would you like to meet Keir Starmer?’ said the young male canvasser wearing a red rosette. The reply from the women, who were trying to escape the rain, was crushing: ‘Who?’ The same scene was played out repeatedly on Starmer’s three visits to the town as he battled not only a lack of recognition but also enthusiasm from people who should have been natural Labour supporters.

Police cordon off street outside polling station after 'serious assault' in Scotland

Images showed several police vehicles outside Martyrs' Church on Broomlands Street in Paisley, Renfrewshire. Police Scotland have say the incident is not election related but is being treated as a serious assault. Renfrewshire Council has confirmed that people are still able to gain access in order to vote. Polling stations opened at 7am on Thursday and will close at 10pm, in an election which could be crucial in determining Scotland’s future within the UK. So far election day has been a more sedate affair across the North East, where all eyes are on the Hartlepool Parliamentary by-election and the County Durham County Council elections, after pollsters predicted Labour could suffer heavy losses.

We must seize this moment of political opportunity

By Echo Comment ECHO COMMENT Keir Starmer and Paul Williams on the campaign trail in Hartlepool where they visited Cameron’s Brewery A RARE accident of political timing and geography brought both leaders of the main political parties to the North-East yesterday ahead of May 6’s elections. The Hartlepool Parliamentary seat is one that Labour under its new leader, Keir Starmer, has to hold on to, but one in which Boris Johnson’s Conservatives feel they have unfinished business from the 2019 election as they would probably have won it when the red wall fell had it not been for a high profile Brexit Party candidate.
