A panel took questions before Port Huron's young Southside Neighborhood Improvement Authority on Thursday ahead of public engagement sessions next month.
Port Huron City council got an earful from the public Monday night about seasonal leaf removal - or lack thereof - in the City of Port Huron. Contractor Emterra Environmental currently provides trash, recycling, yard waste, and bulk leaf removal services in Port Huron. Emterra is in the final year of a five year contract and city manager James Freed says they have not lived up to their end of the agreement. "We've been very candid, they've been doing a terrible job," Freed told WPHM. "They promised us four rigs fully crewed in the city every day. we document where they're going, they've had two, maybe one rig, and have fallen behind. We promised people weekly pickup and they're not getting it." Freed says the city could terminate the agreement with Emterra now if they wanted to, but with staffing shortages and the changing of seasons, they will be staying with Emterra for through the end of the contract. There will be more free COVID-19 vaccination events over the next few days in St. Clair County. Vaccines will be available on a walk in basis Thursday between 9am and 7pm at the Knight Club in Marysville. There will also be an event specifically for teens at Port Huron Northern today from 2:30 to 6:30pm with preregistration required. Friday sees another walk in clinic at the Harvey Reinvestment Center on 24th Street in Port Huron from noon to 6pm. On Saturday you can get the shot at a drive through event at the Tri-Hospital EMS building on Horseshoe drive in Kimball Township from 10am to 2pm. With COVID-19 vaccine eligibility opening up to 12- to 15-year-olds, community partners in St. Clair County are rolling out clinic options for youths in that age group.
A U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention panel recommended the Pfizer vaccine for the group earlier this week.
According to Dr. Annette Mercatante, St. Clair County’s medical health officer, there were ongoing community clinics open to public walk-ins that could accommodate youths with Pfizer doses.
There are clinics this weekend through the St. Clair County Diversity Initiative at the Eleger G. Harvey Reinvestment Center, 3013 24th St., that had both Pfizer and Moderna vaccine available. One was through 6 p.m. Friday and another from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Saturday.

With the Pfizer vaccine now approved for use by teenagers, the St. Clair County Health Department is adding more vaccine clinics for those age 12 and over. Dr. Annette Mercatante says there will be a clinic Thursday from 9am to 7pm at the Knight Club in Marysville, in which the Pfizer vaccine will be used. Youth ages 12 to 15 must have a parent or guardian present. Those 16 and 17 can receive the vaccine if they have a signed parental consent form. The single shot Johnson and Johnson vaccine will also be available today for those over the age of 18 at the same time and location.
