New owners detail plan for iconic Hauck's Handy Store property Share Updated: 8:43 PM EST Dec 23, 2020 Louisville Business First Share Updated: 8:43 PM EST Dec 23, 2020 Louisville Business First The ownership group that purchased the former Hauck's Handy Store earlier this year wants to preserve the legacy of its late owner and share the history of the iconic venue at 1000 Goss Ave. in the Schnitzelburg neighborhood with the community. Craig Priddy, a partner in the ownership group, said his team has hired a preservationist to restore and preserve as much of the roughly 2,600-square-foot building as possible while also saving memorabilia within the store. They are considering a restaurant there with a small museum component to highlight Hauck’s rich history. The ownership group, led by Louisville businessman Fred Pizzonia, purchased the building and several other properties in the 900 and 1000 blocks of Goss Avenue from Tim Mulloy over the summer for $575,000, according to a Jefferson County deed. The property at 1000 Goss Ave. was home for decades to Hauck’s until it closed in early 2019 after the family retired. All of the properties had been owned by the Hauck family.George Hauck, whose parents founded Hauck’s Handy Store in 1912, died at the age of 100 earlier this year. Hauck took over the old-school convenience store after a stint in the U.S. Navy and became a fixture in the Schnitzelburg neighborhood for decades.Hauck also founded the World Dainty Championship, a neighborhood game in which players flip a peg off the ground with a broom handle and hit it. Distance markings can been seen on Hoertz Avenue, next to the former store location.“Hauck’s was an institution,” Jefferson County Property Valuation Administrator Colleen Younger told LBF earlier this year. “George was a great example of what the Schnitzelburg neighborhood represents: faith, hard work and a strong commitment to giving back.” Priddy said the new owners will not pursue Mulloy’s plan for the properties but will instead focus on the store right now. The group has brought in Jeff Walschon, owner of NBD Home Repair, to lead the preservation effort. Walschon said he wants to showcase the old hardwood floors covered in laminate and other original features that may have been hidden over time, including some exterior brick.“My goal is to make it look like it did when it opened,” he said. The project is in its preliminary stages, so a development timeline was not available, but Priddy estimated costs between $200,000 and $250,000.
