A wild cougar was seen at Haystack Rock in Cannon Beach, Oregon. Authorities urged residents to stay away as they worked to get the cougar down from the sea stack.

CANNON BEACH — The citys most famous landmark was closed all day Sunday after one stubborn and unusual visitor refused to leave.

The beach at Haystack Rock near Cannon Beach was closed due to cougar sightings on the rock formation. Officials ensured public safety and the cougars welfare while working to resolve the situation. This marked the second recent instance of cougar sightings on the northern Oregon coast.

A section of the beach near Haystack Rock in Oregon remains closed as the wild animal continues to roam the area.

Officials said they saw tracks leading away from Haystack Rock Monday morning, and there was no sign of the cougar. The rock has been closed since Sunday morning.

The cougar was first spotted at 6:40 a.m. on the morning of July 16. The rocks flock of tufted puffins could be a food source for the cat.

A multi-agency task force of state and local officials was formed to keep both the public and the cougar safe near Haystack Rock.
