NEWPORT — Max W. Newsome, a senior at Rogers High School, received the Dr. Marcus F. Wheatland Award and Scholarship during the 50th annual Black History Month Assembly held at the high school earlier this month..
This year it was a virtual celebration, but Mike Lopes, who was a guidance counselor at Rogers High School in 1973 when he began organizing the high school’s Black History Month Assembly, provided the background that led to the choice of this year’s award winners.
Michael N. Browner, a teacher of Grade 7 social studies and history at Thompson Middle School since September 1998, received the George T. Downing Award.
