ST. PETERSBURG — Austin Meadows doesn’t want to talk about the past. A 3½-week offensive tear by the Rays outfielder/designated hitter created conversation and raised comparisons to his dazzling breakout performance two seasons ago, when he hit .291 with 33 homers and a .922 OPS, made the American League All-Star team, earned team co-MVP honors and had discussions, since-tabled, over a ...

Eventually, you gotta figure the rest of baseball will grow weary of these Rays. Maybe even resentful. It’s one thing for a team of low-paid, unheralded players to shock the world with a 96-win season. And maybe it was endearing to see Tampa Bay come back and dominate the American League and reach Game 6 of the World Series the following season. But these guys aren’t going away. They haven’t ...

The numbers say he hits the ball hard. Just about as hard as anyone in the lineup based on his percentage of swings. He’s muscular, he’s got a discerning eye at the plate, and manager Kevin Cash routinely writes Yandy Diaz’s name in the middle of the lineup, including 13 games as Tampa Bay’s cleanup hitter. Yet, until the ninth inning Sunday in Arlington, Texas, Diaz had gone nearly 10 months ...

Reliever Ryan Sherriff said leaving the Rays during the opening weekend series in Miami, to take time away to address mental health issues, was a pivotal and correct decision. “I just felt like I was in an extremely dark place,” Sherriff said before Saturday’s game in Arlington, Texas. “I felt as if it wasn’t fair to my teammates to continue being there if I wasn’t mentally there. So I needed ...

Mets ace Jacob deGrom (4-2, 0.71) finished May with the lowest ERA by a qualified starter since 1964, a mark he'll try to lower in a start at San Diego. The two-time NL Cy Young Award winner pitched six scoreless innings against Arizona in his previous start and has allowed just four earned runs in 51 innings. Padres right-hander Joe Musgrove (4-4, 2.08) could compete with deGrom for Cy Young votes.

Since Aaron Boone continues to insist his real Yankees are going to start showing up any day now (even though we’re into June and that still hasn’t transpired), every succeeding series is becoming a referendum for Hal Steinbrenner’s $204 million juggernaut. It is happening this weekend with Alex Cora’s somewhat surprising second-place Red Sox making their first trip to the Bronx this season. ...

Kyle Gibson returned from the injured list to pitch 5 1/3 scoreless innings, and the Texas Rangers ended a nine-game losing streak when they held on for a 5-4 win over the defending American League champion Tampa Bay Rays in their return to the site of last season's World Series. Joey Gallo hit in his 10th homer and Charlie Culberson drove in a run with a squeeze bunt for the Rangers, who were back home after the nine losses in a row for the longest winless road trip in team history.

ST. PETERSBURG — Look at the Rays lineup, and tell me what you see. Two power hitters, a little bit of speed, a lot of walks and a gazillion strikeouts. Hard to argue, right? The Rays have four guys hovering at or below a .200 batting average, and two other hitters who are an 0-for-10 streak away from flirting with the Mendoza Line. And now consider this: The Rays began the weekend third in ...

Rangers look to start win streak against Rays Field Level Media 05 Jun 2021, 17:55 GMT+10 The Texas Rangers ended their nine-game skid Friday night and will look to start a winning streak Saturday against the Tampa Bay Rays in Arlington, Texas. A 5 1/3-inning scoreless effort by starter Kyle Gibson put the Rangers back into the win column for the first time since May 23 as Texas heldon for a 5-4 victory over the Rays. In his Bally Sports Southwest interview, second baseman Nick Solak credited t...

Coming off a lost weekend in Detroit, the New York Yankees promptly sputtered through yet another loss against the Tampa Bay Rays.
