Hospitals across the nation are currently facing a critical blood supply shortage.
Throughout the year, blood donation drives across the county were canceled due to the pandemic, forcing blood banks and hospitals to economize. Blood drives that managed to proceed as scheduled operated at reduced capacity and attracted fewer donors due to contagion fears.
At present, the demand for blood far exceeds its supply.
Blood components are used to treat cancer, surgery and trauma patients. The Gulf Coast Regional Blood Center is also accepting convalescent plasma from patients who have recovered from COVID-19.
