Ask Dr. Scott: Fostering heart health: How important is exercise?
Ask Dr. Scott: Dr. Scott T. Anderson
February is American Heart Month, so designated by the National Heart, Lung and Blood Institute, part of the National Institutes of Health. We are reminded that heart disease remains the leading cause of death in the United States. Moreover, we can diminish this risk through exercise, described in Heart Month literature as 30 minutes a day, six days a week of aerobic activity, with occasional strength building.
Healthy dietary habits and smoking cessation are also important, as is treatment of hypertension and high cholesterol. Prevention of obesity is a challenge as well. We are stuck with our family history, which also influences our heart attack risk.
