I think that part of the problem is that people tend to want things to stay the same. For ever. Even without something like Covid they don t.
With the exception of Rock City, none of the venues I played in my home town of Nottingham in the 80s still exist as music venues, and on the whole this is a good thing, because the ones that have replaced them are superior in almost every way. One if the biggest improvements for bands playing their own material is the availability of weekend gigs. Back when I started gigging, Friday and Saturday nights were for discos and covers bands. The one exception was a Friday night slot supporting avant garde jazzers Pinski Zoo at The Hearty Goodfellow, but the waiting list for those gigs tended to be measured in months.
