Apr 20, 2021 6:07 PM DeLand, FL - Things got heated in the Volusia County Council s chambers after council members argued about beach access naming rights and tolls; the former of which council members agreed to table to a later date already. County Chair Jeff Brower—who tried to get staff to move forward with naming rights during their last meeting—began the discussion of adding beach tolls to an October workshop with a presentation about Volusia s workforce and how to create a vibrant community. Volusia County councilmembers will consider Tuesday whether a 34-year ban on dogs on the vast majority of beaches might be worth revisiting.
Dogs have been prohibited on Volusia beaches since 1987, when the county s 47-mile shoreline was consolidated under county control. Allowing animals on the beach would require amending the county s beach code.

Neither allows dogs on the oceanside beaches, restricting the animals to Ponce Inlet and the Halifax River instead.

Suzanne Scheiber, the founder of Dream Geen Volusia, has been a driving force in getting the purchase of the land to this point. During public comment on Agenda Item 6, she plans to give an update on what s been accomplished, including the more than 70,000 signatures on the Defend the Loop petition. The funds raised, the number of signs handed out, the number of signatures on the petition, bumper stickers, and just like, all support that s been garnered. There s been tons of support for this project. Scheiber said that she believes that the project would not have gotten to this point had the public not risen to support it. I think this really matters becau
