First used in Dr Haim Ginott's 1969 book, 'Between Parent and Teenager', the term 'helicopter parent' describes a parent who would hover over their child like a helicopter.
harris: we know the american military is struggling with recruitment. aden does not want to follow in his father s footsteps and he blames democrats, the left, for eroding his patriotism. my dad was a marine officer, growing up, i had considered joining the military, my opinion was it was something that a man of honor would do and serve and protect this country that and protect values that were set and existed back then. i think things are different now. my opinion changed in my late teen years in high school, the left has successfully eroded patriotism by controlling everything like a helicopter parent.
now maria, another story that dana and i were talking about earlier today. helicopter parents, right? dana: mine were not. bill: noted. the same. i didn t hear what dana said. dana: my parents were certainly not helicopter parents. thank goodness i was a fairly good kid. i have to say my mom is one of those mama bears and i remember when my nephew moved into my mother s house because he needed to be closer to new york city for his job. on his first day my mother followed him into manhattan making sure he got everywhere in time and safely. so i do have a helicopter parent. don t get in the way of those mama bears as they insure that their kids are going to work and getting there safely. bill: this is not new then, right? we were thinking mom and dad were helping out with the work
a different sport? i love his advice, persevere. that s the way my dad was, he was tough in general and tough on values but didn t care about specific things, i m not a hawk on rates with my own kids nor do i force them to study, i say you can study if you want or sit down and watch the office on tv but you will have to deal with the great, they have to be responsible for their own grades. i don t love this push of everyone have to get straight a s and get into a good college, i don t think good colleges are good. the thing that bothers me most about youth is there to pressure but not enough values, they are pressured to get to a certain level of achievement and the world has gone mad. what about this notion jennifer cyrus talking about being a helicopter parent? we see so much about that and what it is easy to fall into
