Coutlangus attended the University of South Carolina, then was drafted by and signed with the Giants at age 22. He spent 51 games with San Francisco s Rookie and High-A farm clubs in 2004-05, then was placed on waivers during spring training in 2006 and picked up by the Reds.
After splitting 2006 at Louisville and Chattanooga, he made it to the Reds. In his big league debut on April 7, 2007, he struck out the first batter he faced, to end the sixth inning.
