The 11.4-mile Phase 2 extends the Silver Line from the eastern edge of Reston, Va., west to Washington Dulles International Airport and to Ashburn in eastern Loudoun County, Va. It includes six new stations and a rail maintenance facility.
The Metropolitan Washington Airports Authority targets a late-summer handoff of the Silver Line Metrorail’s second phase to Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority (WMATA).
The Airports Authority has been managing construction of the 23-mile extension, formally called the Dulles Corridor Metrorail project, from Reston to Ashburn, Va. The 11.7-mile, 5-station Phase 1 opened for revenue service in 2014, connecting East Falls Church with Tysons Corner and Reston. (See map below.) WMATA selects Hensel Phelps-Stantec design-build team for new rail facility.

The Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority (WMATA) has selected the design-build team of Hensel Phelps-Stantec to design and deliver the WMATA Rail Heavy Repair and Overhaul (HRO) Facility, located in Prince George’s County, Maryland.
The approximately US$225 million project will support WMATA’s goals for greater efficiency and a new process for railcar maintenance, repairs, and overall operations.
With the second busiest rapid transit system in the United States, averaging over 625,000 daily rail users in 2019, the upgraded facility will advance WMATA’s goals for an improved transit experience as transportation authorities across the nation prepare for an ensuing rebound in ridership following the COVID-19 pandemic.
