For the past two decades, Niseko Village, a ski resort on Japan s northern-most island of Hokkaido, has been dominated by powder pilgrims happy to forgo off-slope luxuries for adrenaline-spiking runs and endless backcountry options. However, a whirl of activity, including the opening of the Park Hyatt Niseko Hanazono in December and the launch of Eleven Experience itineraries in 2019, suggests that change is in the air. Especially promising for broadening the resort s appeal with international travelers is the new Higashiyama Niseko Village, a Ritz-Carlton Reserve, which began welcoming guests late last year. Located at the foot of Mount Niseko Annupuri, with views of Mount Yotei, the hotel has made getting to the slopes easier by letting guests rent gear, book lessons, and buy lift passes in the lobby as well as giving them priority access to the high-speed gondola that leads to 70 runs and 2,191 acres of skiable terrain. KUALA LUMPUR (Jan 20): YTL Corp Bhd’s operating unit YTL Hotels has expanded the Ritz-Carlton Reserve portfolio with the opening of Japan s 50-room Higashiyama Niseko Village resort, which is the first Japanese Ritz-Carlton Reserve and YTL Hotels fifth destination in Niseko Village, according to a news report by CLAD.
CLAD, quoting Higashiyama Niseko Village resort general manager Yasunari Kaji, reported that YTL Hotels owns the Higashiyama Niseko Village resort in Hokkaido. The experience at Niseko Village transforms with the seasons, using our breathtaking alpine setting to offer a connection to and exploration of nature,” Kaji was quoted as saying in the report on Wednesday (Jan 13).

While there is a chance lockdown will be lifted in time for an end-of-season dash to whichever slopes will have us, there has also been a surge in early bookings for winter 2021/22 which obviously feels like a much safer bet. But will going skiing ever feel the same again?
The way we travel is, of course, constantly evolving - not least when it comes to our ski holidays. At a time when privacy and seclusion reign supreme, the cossetting bubble of an ultra-luxury chalet combined with pristine mountain air and vigorous outdoor exercise is more alluring than ever.
