COPPERAS COVE â City officials and volunteers gathered Tuesday to celebrate completion of the $149,897 shade canopy project that installed weather protective coverings at five different locations, including the small and large playgrounds at Copperas Cove City Park.
City Manager Ryan Haverlah and City Council Member Fred Chavez joined Parks and Recreation Director Jeff Stoddard and members of the cityâs Quality of Life Advisory Board to unveil the new coverings, designed to provide protection from the elements year-round.
Board member Susan Dick said she is excited about completion of the long-awaited project paid for with funds from the cityâs capital improvements budget.
The Texas governor announced on Tuesday that the statewide mask mandate will be coming down next week, but masks could still be required in some places at the local level.
On Tuesday, Killeen city spokeswoman Hilary Shine said that the mask mandate made by Mayor Jose Segarra last year had been superseded by the governorâs order in July.
âThe Governorâs order removes the statewide mask requirement and capacity restrictions but allows for each business to determine what practices they wish to employ,â Shine said by email on Tuesday.
Segarra said that at this point it will be mainly on a voluntary basis, for businesses and individuals.
The Killeen carnival is back once again through this weekend.
Bear Jones, the man has been in charge of the carnival for nearly a decade, said local residents can come by between now and Sunday to enjoy rides, food and much more at the Killeen Civic Center on South W.S. Young Drive.
The carnival will be open starting at 6 p.m. through Friday, and starting at 3 p.m. Saturday and Sunday, according to Jones.

Residents can buy a wristband for $25 through Thursday to ride as many rides as they like and they can buy the same wristband for $30 Friday through Sunday.
Killeen police are investigating a Tuesday afternoon incident in which a female passenger was shot and wounded while riding in a vehicle in northeast Killeen.
The Killeen area will receive some welcome sunshine and warmer temperatures this weekend following a week of below freezing weather thanks to Winter Storm Uri.
âIn a nutshell, itâll be much warmer than what weâve seen,â National Weather Service meteorologist Ted Ryan said Friday.
Temperatures will rise to a high of 60 degrees on Sunday, before dipping back down into the low 30s overnight, according to weather.com.
Saturday’s high will be 49 degrees with a low of 38. Monday will see a high of 57 with a low of 33, according to weather.com.
âThat 49 Saturday is going to feel pretty great to a lot of people,â Ryan said.
