Home Again Foundation, a local nonprofit that s seeking solutions to the city s homeless problem, recently built affordable housing units on a piece of land that would have been used for a single-family home.  The units are on Cochrane Drive in the Nevin area. There are currently seven adults and two children living in the units.

Local Leaders Encouraged By Cottage Approach To Affordable Housing Crisis

WCCB Charlotte s CW February 22, 2021 CHARLOTTE, NC – A new prototype to tackle the affordable housing crisis is set to debut just North of Uptown Charlotte. “I’m just lost for words. The dream has come true to help as many people as we can,” said Rick Gilbert, the founder, and CEO of Home Again Foundation. They’ve privately built 8 cottages that will house about 18 people. “We’re very excited. We’ll be moving in residents this weekend,” said Gilbert. Full kitchens, energy-efficient construction, and utilities are included in the rent. “We want to end homelessness,” said Gilbert. The eight units off Cochran Drive are the prototype. The goal is to eventually purchase 28 acres across the street to build an additional 210 units, complete with a child care center and other wrap-around services.

Editor s Note: The Crisis Doesn t Disappear with Tent City

Standing in her rainbow-tie-dyed sweatsuit, purple headband, and pink rain boots, Victoria Boyd was the most colorful person at Tent City as the sun set on Friday, Feb. 19. She was also one of the last. An hour after a county-imposed deadline had passed ordering everyone out of the encampments that had popped up along 12th Street during the pandemic, I found Boyd wheeling a laundry cart full of firewood up an I-277 entrance ramp to a tent where she had stayed for the past six months. Clothes hang to dry at Tent City at around 6 p.m. on Friday, Feb. 19. (Photo by Grant Baldwin)
