Last week, when the record-busting cold blew through Acadiana, the Acadiana Regional Coalition on Homeless and Housing (ARCH) reached out to our community for help.
Within a few days, they d raised $10,000 and we reported that the Stuller Foundation had offered to match donations from then on. And since then, Acadiana stepped in and donated more than $31,000 to help the homeless weather the storm. With the Stuller Foundation s matches, ARCH received almost $63,000.
When Stuller offered their match, ARCH needed about $30,000. ARCH has been stretched to the maximum already because of COVID, followed by two hurricanes. Because of social distancing requirements, the number of shelter beds available for Acadiana neighbors has been drastically reduced. At the same time, job loss and layoffs have increased the number of homeless in our area.
