A bmw ended up mangled and upside down after it flew off of a San Francisco freeway before dawn. It happened at 4 am this morning and slammed onto burke vermont street below. The driver not only survived, he was able to get to the hospital without assistance. Police are trying to figure out what caused the crash. Dark. People are turned away from their own apartments. Last night we stayed with a friend who has a condo down the street. No one has been allowed back since the evacuation yesterday morning. Tonight, were in a hotel. They cleared out all the houses and buildings within the potential collapse zone. It was swinging wildly during the fire. Were told as soon as that crane back there comes down, we can go back in. Cleanup crews knocked down loose debris in preparation to remove the crane. They havent been able to enter the construction site to search for the cause, but a lot of people are suspicious. My gut feeling it was arson. Im thinking, ok, somebody doesnt like these new construction projects. Somebody probably doesnt like whats happening with oakland and the gentryification. Firefighters have been battling back to back fires in the brentwood area. Jackie ward is there. Reporter those firings started within a half hour of each other. That means its been an extra exhausting day for dozens of bay area fifths. And they are firefighters, and their busy season is barely getting started. After july 4, calfire expect their days to get intense, but three fires back to back to back, lead them to think something is up. Were looking into it. It could be human caused intentional, or accidental. Reporter calfire says 250 acres were on fire at one point. Now two fires are completely contained and the third is at 80 . The problem is the terrain, its steep, theres limited access. There are some good roads as far as dirt looks, but its steep for the bulldozer to cut the line.
