The Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services reimburses hospitals in part based on local labor rates. In that respect, hospitals and Monmouth, Ocean and Middlesex counties were better off if central New Jersey simply remained part of our collective imagination.
Those hospitals in fiscal 2015 were moved from the Edison region to the New York City-Newark-Jersey City statistical area, putting them in a region that has higher labor rates and higher Medicare reimbursements than other areas in the state.
