Thanks to a pandemic, Atlantic Beach s Justin Quintal is still the reigning 2019 World Surfing League (WSL) longboard champion.
“The ratings are up in the air,” said Justin, when we met to talk about the state of surf contests.
We also discussed the demise of Surfer magazine as a major media outlet for those trying to be pro surfers. When he was interviewed in November for a story in New York Times, he said this about today’s pro surfers: “You are your own media outlet.”
The 2020 regular contest schedule was canceled due to COVID-19, and the organization is hoping to resume the tour in the fall.
