Clash of titans in Düsseldorf: World Rapid Team Championship

The first-ever World Rapid Team Championship will take place in Düsseldorf on August 26-28. Forty teams from all corners of the world are registered to take part in the tournament. The list of contenders includes the likes of Wesley So, Levon Aronian, Fabiano Caruana, Ian Nepomniachtchi, Maxime Vachier-Lagrave, Jan-Krzysztof Duda and Richard Rapport. In addition, two former world champions, Vishy Anand and Vladimir Kramnik, will represent the humorously named ‘Chess Pensioners’ team.

FIDE bans transgenders from Women events

In a move that is sure to cause a significant stir, FIDE announced that it would be setting restrictions on transgenders participating in official FIDE Women events, specifying that any such restrictions pertain exclusively to man to women transgenders. These regulations come into effect on August 21.

FIDE ratings August 2023

At the beginning of August FIDE published its new rating list. Magnus Carlsen remains the only player with a rating of more than 2800 and is still the clear number one. Hikaru Nakamura follows in second place, five points ahead of world number 3 Fabiano Caruana. Indian juniors Gukesh D. and Praggnanandhaa gained a lot of rating points in July and continue their way to the top.

Star-studded World Team Rapid Chess Championship

From 26th to 28th of August 2023, the German city of Düsseldorf will host a unique competition the first World Team Rapid Chess Championship, organized by FIDE in partnership with WR Logistics GmbH. 43 teams from all over the world will compete for a €250,000 prize fund, and the best team will receive the first prize of €100,000. Participants include former world champions Viswanathan Anand, Vladimir Kramnik, Hou Yifan, Alexandra Kosteniuk, Mariya Muzychuk, as well as Ian Nepomniachtchi, Fabiano Caruana, Boris Gelfand, Levon Aronian, Peter Svidler, Jan-Krzysztof Duda Nodirbek Abdusattorov and Daniil Dubov.
