For young people with serious behavioral health challenges, a new report showed Pennsylvania s congregate-care settings may be the best option. The report s authors surveyed 20 providers of congregate care, in facilities housing from about a dozen kids to almost 300. Jaclyn Kreshock, director of children s behavioral health services for the Pennsylvania Council of Children, Youth and Family Services and the report s co-author, said there is a growing movement to transition youth to more community-based and homelike settings. .
Sexual assault survivors in rural Ohio may have to travel hours to get a forensic exam. During National Forensic Nurses Week, Ohio advocates say they re working to expand access to these trained professionals who can offer trauma-informed care. Tammy Robertson, statewide director of forensic nursing for the Ohio Alliance to End Sexual Violence, said beyond a medical exam, forensic nurses can provide courtroom testimony, and assist patients in ways other health care professionals typically do not. .
Three proposed ballot initiatives affecting transgender students are now in the signature-gathering stage in California. The group Protect Kids California said it is planning to combine them, to try to get one big measure on the ballot next fall. One proposal would prevent transgender girls from competing on girls sports teams in school. .
A Kansas state court judge has blocked several abortion-related restrictions, in a decision which is bound to have an effect in neighboring Missouri. It is being considered a win for the Center for Reproductive Rights and Planned Parenthood on behalf of Kansas abortion providers. The ruling blocks laws requiring providers to give government-scripted information to patients, and to impose mandatory waiting periods, which delay care. .
