Thomas Pierrepoint hanged 300 people and spent his formative years in Hull
He carried out some 300 executions including the only hanging of a woman at Hull Prison.
Thomas Pierrepoint was part of the infamous Pierrepoint dynasty with several members employed as hangmen and executioners.
But what is not so well known is that Thomas spent much of his formative years growing up in what is now Hawthorn Avenue, off Hessle Road, as local historian Mike Covell discovered.

Henry Pierrepoint was employed as an executioner from 1901, carrying out his first execution on November 19th alongside James Billington while Albert Pierrepoint, who was Henry’s uncle, was employed as an executioner from 1931 until 1956.
