LINGAYEN, Pangasinan: Officials of the Department of Human Settlements and Urban Development (DHSUD) in the Ilocos Region on Thursday distributed cash assistance to Pangasinan residents whose houses were blown down by Typhoon Egay.

More than 70 people were killed overnight when fire raged through a five-storey Johannesburg apartment block that may have been rented out illegally, known as a "hijacked building".

Social Development has deployed 16 social workers to provide assessment, trauma counselling and Psychosocial support in the Joburg CBD.

”If there is an official of the city who would be found to have contravened or to have neglected their responsibilities, heads will roll",” says Lebogang Maile, MEC for Human Settlements and Infrastructure Development for Gauteng.

President Cyril Ramaphosa says the tragedy is a "wake up call" to address housing in the inner city. One official says some rooms in the building had been rented out by criminal gangs.

South African emergency crews have recovered at least 70 bodies trapped inside an apartment block in Johannesburg early Thursday morning.
